Distribute the colorant according to its formulation and label directions. Liquids may be poured or sprayed across multiple locations, while water-soluble packets can simplify placement and reduce handling of concentrated dye. Concentrated colorants can stain skin, clothing, concrete, equipment, and other porous surfaces before they are dispersed.

Maintaining Color Through the Season

Dye concentration gradually declines through dilution, overflow, water exchange, rainfall, irrigation withdrawals, degradation, and other site conditions. Flowing-water systems or ponds with short retention times may require more frequent maintenance applications than closed or low-exchange water bodies.

Monitor color intensity and reapply according to the product label. Maintaining a consistent concentration is generally more effective than allowing the color to disappear before making another full application. Active chlorine and some water-treatment processes can also reduce color persistence.

Aquatic colorants do not remove nutrients, sediment, or organic matter from the water. Long-term pond management may also require aeration, circulation, nutrient management, algae control, aquatic herbicides, shoreline management, or other practices appropriate for the site.
