Aquatic Surfactants

Aquatic Surfactants for Professional Herbicide Applications

Aquatic surfactants are specialized spray adjuvants used with compatible herbicides for vegetation management in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, irrigation canals, drainage systems, wetlands, shorelines, and other labeled aquatic sites. They modify the physical properties of the spray solution to improve wetting, spreading, retention, and foliar uptake.

These products are primarily used with foliar herbicide applications targeting floating, emerged, and shoreline vegetation. Common treatment programs may include cattails, phragmites, reeds, water primrose, water hyacinth, alligatorweed, shoreline brush, and other labeled aquatic or riparian species.

Regular Surfactants vs. Aquatic Surfactants

Conventional agricultural and turf surfactants are generally formulated for terrestrial applications. Some contain surfactant chemistries or formulation components that are not labeled for direct application to water and may present greater toxicity to fish, amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, and other non-target organisms.

Aquatic-use surfactants are formulated and labeled for compatibility with herbicides registered for aquatic applications. Their formulation components are selected for use in aquatic environments and generally provide a more appropriate aquatic-toxicity profile than conventional surfactants that are intended only for terrestrial use.

An aquatic designation does not mean that a surfactant is harmless at every concentration. It indicates that the product is intended for aquatic applications when used at the labeled rate and in accordance with the herbicide program.

How Aquatic Surfactants Improve Herbicide Performance

Many aquatic weeds have waxy, pubescent, or water-repellent leaf surfaces that produce a high contact angle and prevent water-based spray droplets from spreading uniformly. Aquatic surfactants reduce surface tension, allowing droplets to spread across a larger portion of the leaf surface.

Improved coverage and retention can increase contact between the herbicide and plant cuticle, support more consistent absorption, and reduce spray loss from beading or runoff. This is particularly important with systemic herbicides that require sufficient foliar uptake and translocation to control roots, rhizomes, or other reproductive structures.

A surfactant does not compensate for an incorrect herbicide rate, inadequate coverage, poor application timing, or treatment of actively stressed vegetation. It improves the delivery characteristics of a properly selected and correctly applied herbicide treatment.

Selecting an Aquatic Surfactant

Selection should be based on the aquatic herbicide label, target vegetation, surfactant chemistry, active surfactant concentration, spray volume, water quality, application equipment, and treatment conditions.

Nonionic surfactants are commonly used because of their broad compatibility with many aquatic herbicides. Herbicide labels may specify a minimum surfactant concentration, such as an 80 percent active nonionic surfactant, along with a mixing rate expressed as a percentage of the finished spray volume. Other programs may permit penetrants, organosilicone surfactants, deposition aids, or specialized aquatic adjuvant blends.

Increasing the surfactant rate beyond the labeled recommendation does not necessarily improve control and may increase foaming, runoff, crop or desirable-plant injury, application cost, or risk to non-target organisms.

Label Requirements for Aquatic Applications

The aquatic herbicide label determines whether an adjuvant is required, recommended, optional, or already included in the formulation. It may also specify the acceptable surfactant class, minimum active concentration, use rate, and aquatic-use qualifications.

When an herbicide label requires an aquatic-use surfactant, that direction is part of the legally enforceable pesticide application instructions. A terrestrial surfactant should not be substituted simply because it has the same general surfactant classification. Both the herbicide instructions and the surfactant labeling must permit the intended aquatic application.
