Spray adjuvants are products added to a tank mixture to modify the physical or chemical properties of the finished spray solution. They may improve pesticide performance, water compatibility, mixing, wetting, spreading, retention, penetration, deposition, droplet size, foam control, or application consistency.

Surfactants are one category of adjuvant. Other adjuvant types include crop-oil concentrates, methylated seed oils, water conditioners, ammonium fertilizers, drift-control agents, deposition aids, compatibility agents, buffers, acidifiers, defoamers, penetrants, stickers, and spray indicators.

Surfactants for Wetting, Spreading, and Foliar Uptake

Surfactants reduce surface tension and modify the interaction between spray droplets and the treated surface. Improved wetting allows droplets to spread across waxy, hairy, or water-repellent foliage rather than bead up and roll off.

Nonionic surfactants provide broad compatibility with many herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and plant growth regulators. Organosilicone surfactants can produce rapid spreading at low concentrations, while specialized penetrants and spreader-stickers may improve cuticular penetration, retention, or rainfastness when permitted by the pesticide label.

Surfactant performance depends on chemistry, active concentration, use rate, target surface, pesticide formulation, carrier volume, water quality, temperature, humidity, and drying conditions.

Crop Oils and Methylated Seed Oils

Crop-oil concentrates and methylated seed oils are activator adjuvants used to improve wetting and penetration of certain foliar-applied pesticides. Oil-based adjuvants can increase movement of an active ingredient through waxy plant cuticles and may improve performance on mature, drought-stressed, or difficult-to-control weeds.

Methylated seed oils generally provide stronger penetration than conventional crop-oil concentrates, but increased activity can also increase the potential for crop or desirable-plant injury. Select the oil type and concentration specified by the pesticide label.

Water Conditioners, Buffers, and Compatibility Agents

Carrier-water quality can affect pesticide solubility, stability, and biological performance. Calcium, magnesium, iron, bicarbonates, suspended solids, high pH, and other water characteristics may reduce the performance of certain active ingredients or create mixing problems.

Water conditioners can bind antagonistic cations, while ammonium sulfate products may condition hard water and improve the activity of herbicides that respond to ammonium ions. Buffers and acidifiers modify spray-solution pH, and compatibility agents help maintain uniform mixtures containing products with different formulation types.

Water-conditioning products should normally be added before pesticides that are sensitive to hardness or antagonistic minerals. Follow the pesticide and adjuvant labels for mixing sequence, concentration, agitation, and compatibility testing.

Drift Control, Deposition, and Foam Management

Drift-control adjuvants modify spray-solution properties to reduce the proportion of small, drift-prone droplets produced during application. Their performance depends on formulation, concentration, nozzle design, operating pressure, spray volume, pesticide mixture, and application equipment.

Deposition aids and stickers can improve droplet retention on the target surface, while defoamers and antifoam agents control foam generated during tank filling, agitation, recirculation, or application. These utility adjuvants improve handling and application consistency but do not replace appropriate nozzle selection, pressure, boom height, weather monitoring, or sprayer calibration.

Selecting the Correct Tank-Mix Adjuvant

Adjuvant selection should begin with the pesticide label. A label may require, recommend, permit, or prohibit specific adjuvant classes depending on the crop, pest, application method, and use site. Some pesticide formulations already contain sufficient adjuvant components and may not benefit from additional products.

Adding an unapproved adjuvant or increasing the adjuvant rate does not necessarily improve performance. The wrong product can reduce efficacy, destabilize the tank mixture, alter droplet characteristics, increase foaming, or cause unacceptable injury to crops, turf, ornamentals, or other desirable vegetation.

For complex tank mixtures, evaluate formulation compatibility, water quality, mixing order, agitation requirements, and final spray volume. A jar test can help identify physical incompatibility before preparing a full spray tank.
