Annual Sedge Control for Turf

Annual sedges are seed-propagated sedges that appear in wet or disturbed turf. They may resemble young nutsedge but do not persist from the same long-lived tuber system.

How to Identify Annual Sedge

Solid triangular stems and leaves in three ranks distinguish sedges from grasses. Seedhead form and lack of persistent tubers help separate annual sedges from yellow or purple nutsedge.

Why It Appears in Turf

Saturated soil, low spots, poor drainage, and thin turf favor germination and seed production.

Make the Site Less Favorable

• Maintain the recommended mowing height and avoid scalping.
• Correct irrigation, drainage, compaction, fertility, or shade problems that thin desirable turf.
• Repair bare areas and use adapted turf cultivars to close openings where seedlings establish.

The current UF/IFAS guide distinguishes annual sedges from perennial nutsedges because some residual herbicides suppress annual seedlings but not established tuber-producing species. Correct identification prevents an unnecessary perennial nutsedge program.

Preemergence products must be applied and activated before germination; postemergence products work best on small, actively growing weeds. Repeat applications may be needed where the label allows.
