Armyworm Control for Turf

Armyworms are leaf-feeding caterpillars that can move across lawns, sports fields, sod, and golf turf in large numbers. Outbreaks can remove green tissue quickly, especially during warm weather.

How to Recognize Armyworms

Look for rapidly expanding thin or brown areas, ragged leaf blades, greenish-brown frass, and caterpillars hiding in the canopy or soil surface by day. A soap flush can bring larvae to the surface and help confirm activity.

Why Damage Develops

Moths lay egg masses on structures and vegetation. Warm temperatures, lush growth, nearby grassy areas, and unnoticed early instars can allow populations to build before obvious damage appears.

Reduce Pest Pressure

• Scout the turf and confirm the pest before treating.
• Correct irrigation, fertility, mowing, thatch, or compaction problems that weaken roots and crowns.
• Treat the susceptible life stage and preserve beneficial insects where practical.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

University guidance favors frequent scouting during migration periods and treatment while larvae are small. Larger caterpillars consume more foliage and are generally harder to control, so early confirmation and prompt timing improve results.

Choosing and Timing a Turf Treatment

Use the products below as a starting point, then select a product labeled for the turf site and target pest. Match the application to the vulnerable life stage, place the material where the pest is feeding, and follow watering-in directions when treatment must reach the crown or root zone.

Research and label note: Research results help explain pest biology, timing, and product performance, but they do not expand a product label. Confirm the turf species, use site, target pest or nematode, life stage, rate, irrigation directions, and application interval on the current label before use.
