Ascochyta Leaf Blight Fungicides

Ascochyta leaf blight is a dramatic but usually temporary foliar disease of Kentucky bluegrass and sometimes tall fescue or perennial ryegrass. Crowns and roots generally remain alive, so affected turf often recovers with new growth.

What to Look For

Large irregular areas can turn straw-colored almost overnight. Green leaves are often mixed among blighted leaves, and individual blades die back from the tip with an abrupt pinched margin. Tiny dark fruiting bodies may look like pepper grains in dead tissue.

Why It Develops

Outbreaks often follow cool rainy weather and then become visible during hot, dry conditions. Uneven soil moisture, irrigation gaps, waterlogging, dull mower blades, mowing wet turf, and excessive spring nitrogen can increase stress and wounding.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Correct irrigation uniformity and avoid rapid swings between saturated and dry soil.
• Water early so the canopy dries quickly.
• Sharpen mower blades and avoid mowing wet or severely wilted turf.
• Reduce mowing frequency during recovery and avoid excessive spring nitrogen.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

Colorado State guidance reviewed in 2025 emphasizes cultural recovery because outbreaks are sporadic and fungicide timing is difficult. Nebraska reported that several fungicide applications to an active ryegrass outbreak had not produced a visible benefit. These findings support accurate diagnosis and stress correction before treatment.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
