Range and pasture herbicides provide selective or nonselective control of broadleaf weeds, invasive plants, unwanted grasses, woody brush, and other undesirable vegetation in grazing lands, permanent grass pastures, hayfields, rangeland, Conservation Reserve Program acres, and other labeled sites.

Select Herbicides by Forage Species and Target Vegetation

Herbicide selection begins with the desirable forage species and the weeds or brush being managed. Products that are selective in established grass pastures may severely injure or eliminate clover, alfalfa, and other desirable broadleaf forage species.

Identify annual, biennial, and perennial weeds before treatment and evaluate their growth stage, density, root system, and susceptibility. Common range and pasture programs may target thistles, knapweeds, leafy spurge, broomweed, dock, plantain, ragweed, kochia, horsenettle, locoweed, sagebrush, rabbitbrush, mesquite, multiflora rose, and other labeled herbaceous or woody species.

Annual weeds are generally most susceptible when small and actively growing. Biennial weeds are often best treated during the rosette stage, while established perennial weeds and woody plants may require treatment during specific growth stages when translocation to roots and reproductive structures is greatest.

Selective, Residual, and Brush-Control Herbicides

Many pasture herbicides contain Group 4 synthetic auxins such as 2,4-D, dicamba, aminopyralid, picloram, clopyralid, fluroxypyr, or triclopyr. These active ingredients primarily control broadleaf plants and woody vegetation while allowing labeled grasses to remain.

Other herbicide groups may provide control of annual grasses, difficult perennial weeds, seedlings, or new germination. Compare active ingredient, mode of action, selectivity, soil activity, residual period, target spectrum, and desirable forage tolerance before selecting a product.

Residual herbicides can extend control beyond the initial application but may affect reseeding, interseeding, crop rotation, or establishment of desirable broadleaf species. Soil texture, organic matter, rainfall, temperature, and application rate can influence residual activity and plant response.

Pasture Sprays and Rangeland Brush Applications

Broadcast foliar applications are used where susceptible weeds are distributed throughout the treatment area. Spot treatments are appropriate for isolated infestations but must still comply with maximum per-acre rates and annual application limits.

Woody plant programs may include foliar, basal-bark, cut-stump, dormant-stem, or soil-applied treatments. Effective brush control depends on species identification, stem diameter, bark condition, plant maturity, soil moisture, application timing, carrier selection, and complete coverage of the specified treatment zone.

Some foliar treatments require a compatible surfactant, crop-oil concentrate, methylated seed oil, or other adjuvant. Basal-bark and cut-stump treatments may require an oil carrier or specialized penetrant. Use only the carrier and adjuvant types permitted by the herbicide label.

Grazing, Haying, and Manure Management

Grazing and harvest restrictions vary substantially among range and pasture herbicides. Review the label for livestock species, lactating dairy animals, slaughter withdrawal, hay harvest, forage use, reseeding, and rotational-crop requirements.

Some residual herbicides can remain active in treated forage and pass through grazing animals into manure. Hay, bedding, manure, compost, or treated plant material may injure sensitive broadleaf crops when moved away from the treated property. Products containing aminopyralid, clopyralid, picloram, or related active ingredients require particular attention to label-specific forage and manure stewardship instructions.

The absence of a grazing restriction does not necessarily mean there are no haying, manure, compost, slaughter, or crop-rotation restrictions. Evaluate each requirement separately when comparing products.

Application Timing, Coverage, and Resistance Management

Herbicide performance is influenced by weed growth stage, plant stress, air temperature, soil moisture, rainfall, spray coverage, carrier volume, and application timing. Treatments made during drought, extreme heat, dormancy, or advanced plant maturity may provide less consistent control.

Calibrate application equipment to deliver the labeled rate across the measured acreage. Manage spray droplet size, boom height, wind speed, temperature inversions, and proximity to susceptible crops, trees, ornamentals, water, and other non-target areas.

Rotate effective herbicide modes of action and integrate mowing, grazing management, reseeding, fertility, biological control, and follow-up scouting where appropriate. Successful range and pasture vegetation management usually requires a multi-year program rather than a single application.
