BotaniGard 22WP is a professional biological insecticide containing 22% Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, an entomopathogenic fungus that controls a broad range of labeled insect and mite pests by contact. Each pound contains at least 1 × 10¹³ viable fungal spores, providing a high-concentration wettable powder for greenhouse, nursery, field-crop, ornamental, fruit, vegetable, herb, landscape, turf, and other labeled pest-management programs.

When BotaniGard spores contact a susceptible pest, they attach to the exterior, germinate, and penetrate through the cuticle. The fungus then grows within the pest and causes mortality. This biological mode of action makes BotaniGard 22WP a valuable stand-alone treatment, tank-mix partner, or rotational product in integrated pest-management and resistance-management programs.

Labeled Use Sites

BotaniGard 22WP is labeled for use on listed food and nonfood crops grown in greenhouses, shadehouses, indoor and outdoor nurseries, fields, orchards, commercial landscapes, and interiorscapes. Labeled crops include vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, spices, ornamentals, flowers, foliage plants, bedding plants, trees, shrubs, vines, turfgrasses, sod, field crops, corn, forage crops, rangeland, improved pasture, forestry crops, and other specifically listed crops.

The label also includes soil treatments for turf, orchards, and container ornamentals; pre-plant dips for rooted and unrooted cuttings; and certain mushroom-house applications. Crop and pest eligibility varies by state, and several pests or crops are specifically excluded in California.

Target Pests

Labeled pests include aphids, whiteflies, thrips, psyllids, mealybugs, leafhoppers, planthoppers, plant bugs, weevils, scarab beetles, white grubs, billbugs, flea beetles, Colorado potato beetles, caterpillars, borers, grasshoppers, locusts, mole crickets, spider mites, mushroom flies, phorid flies, and other specifically listed pests.

Key greenhouse and nursery targets include greenhouse whitefly, silverleaf whitefly, sweet potato whitefly, green peach aphid, melon aphid, western flower thrips, greenhouse thrips, citrus mealybug, grape mealybug, pear psylla, lace bugs, Lygus bugs, tarnished plant bugs, leafhoppers, two-spotted spider mites, black vine weevils, root weevils, and white grubs.

Application Notes

Begin applications at the first appearance of pests. BotaniGard 22WP is most effective when used early, before high pest populations develop. The label states that it typically takes 7 to 10 days after the first application to see control. Thorough coverage is essential because the fungal spores must contact the target pest.

For greenhouse, shadehouse, nursery, landscape, and interiorscape applications, use 0.5 to 2 lb per 100 gallons for most labeled pests. Use 0.5 to 1 lb per 100 gallons for whiteflies, mealybugs, and aphids, and 1 to 2 lb per 100 gallons for thrips. For high-volume spraying, do not exceed 2 lb per 100 gallons. Low-volume applications normally use 0.5 to 2 lb per 5,000 to 20,000 sq ft.

For listed outdoor food crops, rangeland, improved pasture, and forestry uses, typical ground rates range from 0.25 to 1 lb per acre. Rates up to 3 lb per acre are allowed for high pest pressure or dense foliage where specified by the label.

For soil-dwelling insects in turf, orchards, and container ornamentals, apply 1 to 4 dry oz per 1,000 sq ft. Use at least 1 gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft and irrigate after application to disperse the product into the soil. Do not apply to water-saturated soil.

For pre-plant cutting dips, mix 0.25 to 0.5 dry oz per gallon of water. Prepare only enough spray or dip solution for one day. Do not leave BotaniGard mixed in water overnight because the live spores lose viability after extended contact with water.

Apply at 5- to 10-day intervals under low to normal pest pressure. High populations, especially whiteflies and aphids, may require 2- to 5-day intervals. Repeat while pest pressure persists. Spray foliage to wet while avoiding runoff.

BotaniGard 22WP is designed for use without additional wetting agents or spreaders. Some adjuvants, insecticide formulations, and fungicides can kill the spores or cause mixing problems. Confirm compatibility before tank mixing and follow the most restrictive directions on all product labels.
