Katana Turf Herbicide is a professional selective herbicide containing 25% flazasulfuron for postemergence and residual control of difficult grassy weeds, sedges, and broadleaf weeds in established warm-season turfgrass. It is especially valuable for removal of overseeded ryegrass, annual bluegrass, kyllinga, nutsedge, Poa trivialis, crabgrass, and other labeled weeds in bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, buffalograss, centipedegrass, seashore paspalum, and other labeled warm-season turf.

As an HRAC Group 2 sulfonylurea herbicide, Katana inhibits acetolactate synthase (ALS) and is absorbed through foliage and roots. Weed growth stops within hours after application, while visible chlorosis, discoloration, and eventual necrosis develop over time. Its extremely low use rates, broad weed spectrum, and flexible golf-course labeling make Katana a valuable tool for professional turf weed management and resistance-rotation programs.

Labeled Use Sites

Katana Turf Herbicide is labeled for golf courses including fairways, roughs, greens, tees, collars, and approaches; industrial parks; tank farms; sod farms; turf seed farms; cemeteries; professionally managed sports fields; commercial turf; and residential turf. Golf green treatments are restricted to bermudagrass and seashore paspalum. Labeled warm-season turf includes bermudagrass, buffalograss, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass, seashore paspalum, and certain other tolerant warm-season turfgrasses.

Target Weeds

Katana controls or suppresses numerous labeled grass, sedge, and broadleaf weeds including annual bluegrass (Poa annua), rough bluegrass (Poa trivialis), perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass, volunteer ryegrass, tall fescue, smooth crabgrass, southern crabgrass, barnyardgrass, quackgrass, rattail fescue, kyllinga species including green, false-green, fragrant, and cocks-comb kyllinga, yellow nutsedge, purple nutsedge, annual sedge, globe sedge, cylindric sedge, rice flatsedge, dandelion, white clover, wild violet, chickweed, henbit, chamberbitter, catsear dandelion, spotted spurge, yellow woodsorrel, and other weeds listed on the label.

Application Notes

Katana application rates vary by target weed and turf use. General weed-control rates range from approximately 1.5 to 3.0 oz per acre. Annual bluegrass is treated at 2.5 to 3.0 oz per acre, while kyllinga species are generally treated at 1.5 to 2.25 oz per acre. Yellow nutsedge uses 1.5 to 3.0 oz per acre and purple nutsedge uses 3.0 oz per acre. Perennial ryegrass transition treatments use 0.5 to 1.5 oz per acre depending on conditions and desired transition speed.

A nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v, equivalent to 1 qt per 100 gal of spray solution, provides maximum performance and is the standard label-backed adjuvant recommendation. Broadcast applications should use a minimum of 20 gal of water per acre; higher spray volumes are recommended where weed pressure is dense or growing conditions are unfavorable.

Do not exceed 3.0 oz per acre in a single broadcast application where that maximum is specified, and do not exceed three applications per year. The general annual maximum for higher-rate weed-control programs is 9.0 oz per acre per year, with a 28-day minimum interval between broadcast applications and a 21-day minimum interval for labeled spot treatments of difficult weeds. Do not apply to stressed, saturated, newly established, or sensitive turf. Always read and follow the complete product label.
