Ornamec Over-The-Top Grass Herbicide

Ornamec Over-The-Top Grass Herbicide is a professional selective postemergence herbicide containing 6.75% fluazifop-P-butyl for control of annual and perennial grassy weeds in ornamental landscapes, nurseries, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and other labeled noncrop sites. Ornamec provides highly targeted grass control without controlling broadleaf weeds or sedges, making it especially useful for managing unwanted grasses growing through established landscape beds.

Ornamec is a systemic grass herbicide absorbed through treated foliage and moved into shoots, roots, rhizomes, stolons, and growing points. Growth of susceptible grasses stops soon after application, followed by loss of vigor, yellowing or reddening, and eventual plant death. The extensive ornamental-tolerance list allows true over-the-top applications on many labeled species, while directed sprays are recommended for more sensitive ornamentals.

Labeled Use Sites

Ornamec is labeled for grass control in newly transplanted and established ornamentals, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, nurseries, and landscaped noncrop areas. The label contains an extensive Table 1 of ornamentals suitable for over-the-top application, including many junipers, hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, arborvitae, boxwoods, cotoneasters, euonymus, ficus, forsythia, ivy, lantana, liriope, palms, pines, privet, roses, viburnums, yews, yucca, and numerous other labeled species. More sensitive plants listed in Tables 2 through 4 should generally receive directed applications to reduce the risk of foliar injury.

Target Weeds

Ornamec controls labeled annual grasses including barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, fall panicum, field sandbur, giant foxtail, green foxtail, yellow foxtail, goosegrass, seedling guineagrass, itchgrass, seedling johnsongrass, junglerice, prairie cupgrass, red rice, southern sandbur, Texas panicum, volunteer barley, volunteer oats, volunteer rye, volunteer corn, volunteer wheat, wild oats, witchgrass, and woolly cupgrass. Perennial grass targets include bermudagrass, guineagrass, quackgrass, rhizome johnsongrass, torpedograss, and wirestem muhly.

Application Notes

Apply Ornamec to actively growing grassy weeds before they exceed the growth stages listed on the label. For broad annual and perennial grass-control programs in ornamentals, use 64 to 96 fl oz per acre with a nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v. Perennial grass programs generally use 96 fl oz per acre per application and may require three applications for complete control.

For spot treatments in ornamentals, nurseries, and landscape areas, mix 2.5 fl oz of Ornamec plus 1/3 fl oz of nonionic surfactant per gallon of water. Spray for thorough coverage without runoff. Repeat treatments may be required for full-season perennial grass control.

Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 1 hour. Do not treat grasses stressed by moisture, temperature, low fertility, or mechanical or chemical injury. Do not apply after grasses have tillered, formed seedheads, or exceeded their labeled growth stage. Always read and follow the complete product label.
