Bermudagrass Decline Fungicides

Bermudagrass decline is commonly associated with take-all root rot on intensively managed bermudagrass. It weakens roots and stolons, so damage becomes most visible when the turf is under environmental or management stress.

What to Look For

Irregular yellow, bronze, or white thinning develops in patches. Roots and stolons become dark and necrotic, and severe areas may collapse during heat, shade, traffic, or drought stress.

Why It Develops

Excess thatch, poor drainage, over-irrigation, very low mowing, low fertility, heavy growth regulation, cloudy shoulder-season weather, and stressed turf all increase risk.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Improve surface and subsurface drainage and avoid chronic saturation.
• Aerify and topdress to reduce excessive thatch and compaction.
• Maintain balanced fertility and an appropriate mowing height.
• Reduce unnecessary growth-regulator and traffic stress during recovery.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State reports that preventive measures should be timed while soil temperatures favor pathogen activity, before stress symptoms appear. Fungicide performance improves when products reach crowns and roots; site correction remains essential because the causal organisms may be present even in symptomless turf.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
