Chinch Bug Control for Turf

Chinch bugs are sap-feeding insects that injure turf with feeding and salivary toxins. Southern chinch bug is a major pest of St. Augustinegrass; other species affect cool-season and warm-season turf.

How to Recognize Chinch Bugs

Irregular yellow patches turn reddish-brown and then straw-colored, often in sunny, hot, dry locations. Part the canopy or use a flotation or vacuum sample to find fast-moving black-and-white adults and orange-red nymphs.

Why Damage Develops

Hot dry weather, heavy thatch, drought stress, and repeated broad-spectrum insecticide use can favor outbreaks by stressing turf or reducing natural enemies.

Reduce Pest Pressure

• Scout the turf and confirm the pest before treating.
• Correct irrigation, fertility, mowing, thatch, or compaction problems that weaken roots and crowns.
• Treat the susceptible life stage and preserve beneficial insects where practical.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State recommends confirming live chinch bugs because drought and several diseases produce similar symptoms. Improving moisture management and thatch conditions supports recovery, while insecticide placement must reach the lower canopy where bugs are active.

Choosing and Timing a Turf Treatment

Use the products below as a starting point, then select a product labeled for the turf site and target pest. Match the application to the vulnerable life stage, place the material where the pest is feeding, and follow watering-in directions when treatment must reach the crown or root zone.

Research and label note: Research results help explain pest biology, timing, and product performance, but they do not expand a product label. Confirm the turf species, use site, target pest or nematode, life stage, rate, irrigation directions, and application interval on the current label before use.
