Dallisgrass Control for Turf

Dallisgrass is a coarse perennial bunchgrass that forms rapidly enlarging clumps in warm-season and cool-season turf. Short rhizomes and prolific seed make established plants difficult to remove.

How to Identify Dallisgrass

Wide coarse leaves arise from a flattened crown. Tall seed stalks carry several drooping branches with paired rows of dark seeds.

Why It Appears in Turf

Moist fertile soil, open turf, and movement of contaminated soil or seed favor establishment. Mowing spreads seed but does not eliminate the crown.

Make the Site Less Favorable

• Maintain the recommended mowing height and avoid scalping.
• Correct irrigation, drainage, compaction, fertility, or shade problems that thin desirable turf.
• Repair bare areas and use adapted turf cultivars to close openings where seedlings establish.

Current UF/IFAS turf guidance classifies dallisgrass as a difficult perennial grass and emphasizes species-specific turf tolerance. Spot renovation or repeated selective programs may be required; isolated clumps are easier to eradicate before seed production.

Perennial weeds often regrow from stolons, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs, or deep roots. Select a product labeled for the desirable turf and target weed, treat actively growing plants, and plan the complete sequence of repeat applications or renovation steps allowed by the label.
