Damping-Off Fungicides

Damping-off attacks turf before or shortly after emergence. Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium species can all be involved, and they do not respond to the same fungicides.

What to Look For

Seedlings may fail to emerge, become water-soaked, collapse at the soil line, or die in spots and streaks. White fungal growth may be visible during humid mornings, but laboratory diagnosis is often needed to identify the pathogen group.

Why It Develops

Saturated soil, high seeding rates, heavy mulch, excess starter fertilizer, prolonged leaf wetness, and weather that slows germination create a dense, humid seedbed.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Seed during the recommended window and at the correct rate.
• Prepare a well-drained seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact.
• Keep the surface moist but not saturated and reduce irrigation as seedlings root.
• Avoid excessive starter fertilizer and mulch.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State and Penn State emphasize pathogen identification because products effective on Pythium damping-off may not control Rhizoctonia or Fusarium. The collection combines products carrying the catalog's general damping-off or Pythium damping-off tags; confirm the causal organism and current label before treatment.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Identify the likely pathogen group before selecting a product. Use the products below as a starting point, then confirm the current label covers the turf site, disease or pathogen, establishment stage, application method, rate, interval, and watering directions.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
