Fairy Ring Fungicides

Fairy ring is caused by soil- and thatch-inhabiting fungi that alter water movement and nutrient availability. Symptoms can include dark green growth, mushrooms, drought-stressed rings, or dead turf.

What to Look For

Rings or arcs may be dark green, tan, or dead, and mushrooms or puffballs may appear after rain. Affected soil can become water repellent, causing wilt even when nearby turf is moist.

Why It Develops

Organic matter, buried wood, thick thatch, inconsistent root-zone moisture, and hydrophobic soil contribute to symptoms. Rings may persist and expand from year to year.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Maintain uniform root-zone moisture with wetting agents where appropriate.
• Aerify to improve infiltration and dilute thatch with topdressing.
• Remove buried organic debris when practical.
• Use nitrogen or iron carefully to mask green rings without overstimulating growth.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

University guidance consistently finds that fungicides work best preventively and must be moved into the thatch and upper root zone with irrigation. Fungicide plus a soil surfactant often performs better than fungicide alone. Curative recovery is slower where water-repellent soil has already developed.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
