Bermudagrass Control in Cool-Season Turf

Bermudagrass is an excellent warm-season turfgrass but a difficult perennial weed when it invades tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, zoysiagrass, or mixed stands. Stolons and rhizomes rapidly colonize sunny areas.

How to Identify Bermudagrass

Fine pointed leaves arise from wiry creeping stolons, and seedheads have three to five finger-like branches. A fringe of hairs occurs at the collar and ligule.

Why It Appears in Turf

Full sun, heat, low mowing, drought, and spread from adjoining beds or lawns favor encroachment. Small stolon or rhizome fragments can establish new patches.

Make the Site Less Favorable

• Maintain the recommended mowing height and avoid scalping.
• Correct irrigation, drainage, compaction, fertility, or shade problems that thin desirable turf.
• Repair bare areas and use adapted turf cultivars to close openings where seedlings establish.

University of Georgia research shows that selective suppression usually requires repeated applications matched to the desirable turf species; spot applications of a nonselective herbicide remain the most reliable renovation approach. Fall treatments can improve movement into rhizomes when the label permits.

Perennial weeds often regrow from stolons, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs, or deep roots. Select a product labeled for the desirable turf and target weed, treat actively growing plants, and plan the complete sequence of repeat applications or renovation steps allowed by the label.
