Turf Rust Fungicides

Rust diseases produce orange spores on leaves and are most common when turf growth is too slow to replace infected tissue.

What to Look For

Turf develops a yellow-orange cast, and orange, yellow, or brown powder rubs onto shoes, mowers, and fingers. Leaves thin and may die back from the tip during severe outbreaks.

Why It Develops

Low nitrogen, drought stress, shade, cool cloudy weather, poor air movement, and infrequent mowing favor disease.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Use rust-resistant cultivars and adapted seed mixtures.
• Correct low nitrogen based on soil and turf needs.
• Water deeply enough to prevent drought stress but allow leaves to dry.
• Mow regularly and improve light and airflow.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State identifies resistant cultivars, adequate fertility, and stress reduction as the most economical controls. Fungicides can be preventive or curative, but turf often recovers once growth resumes and infected leaves are mowed away.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
