Turf Seed Rot and Damping-Off Fungicides

Seed rot and damping-off attack turf before or shortly after emergence. Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium species can all be involved, and they do not respond to the same fungicides.

What to Look For

Seed may decay before emergence, leaving slow or uneven germination. Emerging seedlings become water-soaked, collapse at the soil line, and die in spots, streaks, or irregular patches. White mycelium may be visible in morning moisture.

Why It Develops

Saturated soil, high seeding rates, excess fertilizer, heavy mulch, prolonged leaf wetness, and weather that slows germination create a dense, humid seedbed.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Seed during the recommended window and at the labeled rate.
• Prepare a well-drained seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact.
• Keep the surface moist but not saturated and reduce irrigation as seedlings root.
• Avoid excessive starter fertilizer and mulch.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State stresses pathogen identification because products labeled for Pythium damping-off will not necessarily control Rhizoctonia or Fusarium. Penn State likewise lists different chemistries for the different pathogens. The products below are selected by the catalog's Pythium damping-off tag, not as universal seed-rot cures.

Choosing and Using a Fungicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.

Research and label note: University research may identify useful activity even when a current product label does not name this disease. That is research evidence, not a label direction. Apply a product only where the turf or application site and use pattern are permitted, and follow the complete label and applicable state requirements.
