Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) Control

Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) is a light-green winter annual or short-lived perennial that produces seed even under close mowing. It disrupts color and playability and declines rapidly during heat.

How to Identify Annual Bluegrass

Plants form soft light-green clumps with boat-shaped leaf tips and a folded bud. Pale open seedheads can appear below normal mowing height and make infested turf look silvery.

Why It Appears in Turf

Frequent irrigation, compaction, low mowing, excess nitrogen, and open soil favor germination from late summer through spring. Large seed banks and variable biotypes complicate control.

Make the Site Less Favorable

• Maintain the recommended mowing height and avoid scalping.
• Correct irrigation, drainage, compaction, fertility, or shade problems that thin desirable turf.
• Repair bare areas and use adapted turf cultivars to close openings where seedlings establish.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

University of Georgia guidance stresses that turfgrass species and seasonal dormancy determine which preemergence and postemergence options are safe. Programs should be planned before germination and rotated where resistance is a concern.

Choosing a Turf Herbicide

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the herbicide to the desirable turf species and the weed's growth stage. Preemergence products must be applied and activated before germination; postemergence products work best on small, actively growing weeds. Repeat applications may be needed where the label allows.

Research and label note: University research may discuss treatments or timings that are not permitted on every turf species or use site. Research evidence does not expand a product label. Confirm the desirable turf species, use site, target weed, application timing, rate, adjuvant directions, and reseeding restrictions on the current label before use.
