Leaf Spot and Melting-Out Fungicides

Leaf spot and melting-out are a group of diseases that begin on leaves and can progress into crowns and roots. Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, fescues, and several warm-season grasses may be affected.

What to Look For

Leaves develop brown, purple, or tan spots with darker margins. When infection reaches the lower plant, turf thins and turns yellow or brown in irregular areas—the stage commonly called melting out.

Why It Develops

Cool wet weather favors leaf infection; heat and stress can drive crown and root decline. Shade, low airflow, excess or deficient nitrogen, thatch, drought, low mowing, and long leaf wetness increase severity.

Reduce Disease Pressure

• Use resistant cultivars and adapted seed mixtures.
• Maintain balanced fertility and an appropriate mowing height.
• Water deeply and early so leaves dry quickly.
• Reduce shade, improve airflow, and manage thatch.

What University Research and Extension Guidance Says

NC State recommends treating at the earliest leaf-spot stage because fungicides may slow spread after melting out but cannot restore dead plants. University tables show meaningful efficacy differences among active ingredients; some products that control other turf diseases are weak on leaf spot, so product selection should be evidence-based.

Use the products below as a starting point, then match the active ingredient, FRAC group, turf species, use site, timing, rate, interval, and watering directions to the current product label. Preventive or very early applications are usually more reliable than rescue treatments after extensive injury. Rotate effective FRAC groups and combine fungicides with the cultural changes above.
